In Memory...

Gertie

Ms.Susan Kacsmark

On October 19th, 2020 I brought my Sweet little Grand-doggie Gertie in to the Novi AEC. On the day before she began having seizures. I was up with Gertie all night long. She had a total of 18 seizures in all.

I stayed close to her and petted her side and reassured her that she was a good girl and that I loved her very much. It was so hard to see this happening to her. She started getting confused and had a difficult time trying to get up..

My Sister-law came over to drive us to the Animal Emergency Center in Novi. We notified them we were here in the parking lot. As she layer in my arms, she looked up at me and as I looked into her brown eyes, and I knew she was saying, “I know how much you Love me, but it is time and we must say goodbye.” Grandma.
She had another seizure while I held her in my arms. Sherrie called the AEC and told them she had just had another one. Renee came out and wrapped her in a blanket, to take her inside to see the Vet. It felt like an Eternity waiting. Renee phoned and said we could come in. She came in with Gertie, laying a blanket on the table and wanted us to know the Vet would be right in.

She told us that without a doubt Gertie had a brain tumor. She said that she would never get better. I knew I was doing the right thing. She left to give us time to say our goodbyes. I hugged her and told her how much Grandma loved her. I told her she would always be in my heart and I had ten years of beautiful memories and someday we would be together again. She passed away very peacefully and with dignity.

Gertie loved going for rides. I called her my little sidekick or co-pilot. She always knew when we pulled in the parking at CVS to pick up a prescription that she was going to get a treat. She stood up with her front paws of my console, wagging her tail patiently and she would finally get her treat and sometimes even two. They would always say, “Hi Miss Gertie, here’s your treat“.
My Daughter, Rachel and I went to the Cabberas County Humane Society in Concord, NC. I saw this little Black and Tan dog in one of the kennels and asked about her. The lady said “”Oh yes that is Miss Gertie”. She brought her out and she jumped up on my lap, licked my cheek and that was it, I knew she was the one.
When we got home, she ran and sat right on the middle of the couch with one ear up and the other ear down. She knew this was her new forever home.

All the people at the Novi AEC were so friendly, loving and caring.
Thank you All. I am truly grateful for the way you all treated Gertie with Love.

Sincerely with my gratitude , Susan Kacsmark
